Task 7
Question 7:
The top 5 cybersecurity risks that South
Africa faced in 2015 where;
1) Ransomware
2) The Internet
of Things
3) Cyber-espionage
4) Increase in
cyber theft and
5) Insecure
passwords
Users enable hackers to obtain these details more easily, as they
are not careful when it comes to providing their personal details online. Without checking and making sure that the
emails they receive are legit, users just go ahead and reply to the sender,
providing whatever details are asked by “financial institutions”. Which leads to users being fooled. Before users sign up or take part on a
website, they don’t check to see whether it is a legit website, therefore they
just end up providing their personal details to sign up. Thus leading them to have given their
personal details to hackers. Hackers
sometimes also pretend to be a employees of known companies, calling users on
the phone, sounding legit and asking them for their personal details. Hackers have become so smart these days, that
they know that most users don’t read these pop-ups on computers, and that they
just accept everything popping up, just for it to go away. Which leads to users inviting hackers into
their computers, that contains their personal details.
The best way to mitigate such risks, is to use strong passwords,
activate firewalls to secure computers, secure all mobile devices and keep all
personal information protected. Users
should also carefully read through any emails, texts etc, before replying and
providing personal data. (Digital Citizens, 2015)

Task 3 The social economy
The Benefits
and Risks of Social Technologies:
• Individual-
Social technologies acts as a worldwide connectivity between people. If one simply wants to find someone, one can
search for that person online and interact with whoever. Even if one wants to
simply just find information about anything, one can just search for it. The
risk that an individual can face concerning social technologies is, fraud or
identity theft. A person’s details
online, can be used to put one at risk.
• Corporate-
Social technologies can be real-time information sharing in a workplace, most
business now use the media to get messages across to their target
audiences. As well as sending and
receiving messages to everyone involved in the business concerning work affairs
in the workplace. The risk a business can face concerning social technologies,
is that it can be costly, as most people in the workplace can be spending more
time using the work’s internet for personal use, thus increasing the bill.
•
Communities- Communities can have social media groups, and act as life lines
for any of their members. The risk
communities can face are conflict of interest, thus making exposing each other
online. (Advantages and Disadvantages of social networking, n.d)
Task 2.1
Homo Naledi,
is bones discovered in 2013 by Professor Lee Berger from Wits University, and
these bones are believed to be the remains of a new species of ancient human
relative.
These bones
were found in the Dinaledi chamber, known to be the chamber the chamber of
stars in South Africa. The bones of
these what is believed to be a new species of ancient human relative, amounted
up to more than 1500 pieces of bones.
Which is said to be belonging to approximately 15 individuals, which
comes forth to be remains of infants, toddlers, twins, teenagers and one of an elderly
specie.
The leaders
of the National Geographic-funded project, named the creature Homo Naledi, of
which naledi means “star” in one of South Africa’s official languages
Sesotho. The name given to the new
species, probably is because of how remarkable the existence of these bones are
to the founder and because it was found in the chamber of stars. The significance of Homo Naledi, is that it
has a small brain, barely the size of a lemon, tiny teeth that are in shape and
tall, of which the females are just a little shorter than the male. The thorax of the creature is more like an
ape’s, but it’s hand are very modern-like, of which the shape of the hands are
fitted to make basic tools. The creature
seems to be a mixture of what seems to be a human as well as an ape, as its
feet and ankles are structured to walk upright, but the hands are more curved,
sharing the same hand features of a tree ape.
The bones
are not yet dated, but are believed to be modern. It would’ve been easier to
set an approximate date on the bones, if other animals were also found in the chamber.
